A man came to Abu Darda (ra) while he was in Damascus. Abu Darda asked him, “What has brought you here my brother?” He replied, “A hadith which you relate from the Prophet (salalahi alayhiwasalam).” Abu Darda asked, “Have you come for some worldly need?” He replied, “No.” “You have come only to seek this hadith?” He replied, “Yes.” Abu Darda then said, “I heard the Messenger of Allah (saw) say:“Whoever travels a path seeking sacred knowledge, Allaah will place him on a path leading to Paradise. The angels lower their wings for the student of sacred knowledge, pleased with what hen is doing. The creatures in the heavens and earth seek forgiveness for the student of sacred knowledge and even the fish in the water. The superiority of the scholar over the devout worshipper is like the superiority of the full moon over the heavenly bodies. The religious scholars are the heirs to the prophets. The prophets leave no money to bequest, rather they leave knowledge. Whoever seizes it, has taken a bountiful share” (Imam Ahmad, Abu Daawood and Ibn Maajah)

“The Heirs to the Prophet” is a divine inspiration in the pursuit of beneficial and true knowledge. The true knowledge stimulated in this book is that which in of the tongue and the heart, inward and outward knowledge. This understanding of the Deen benefits the individual and those around them.

This is a simply beautiful reminder for the one who has a deep seriousness to attain goodness in this world as well as the next. “The Heirs to the Prophet” outlines what is needed to be a great scholar and distinguishes the qualities that are needed for such a divine role, to be the full moon amongst the heavenly bodies. To distinguish between preachers, devout worshipers and that of the realm of scholars, is the difference between the full moon over the stars. As the Prophet salalahi alayhi wasalam said. The full moon comparing to the scholar is that the illuminating light extends to the Earth and benefits the inhabitants. The light of the planets only extend to itself, thus the benefit is only to that individual, alone.

The great scholar Imam Ibn Rajab, in this book has fired a silver bullet that slays the superficiality that stubbornly persists today. He says, “The uniformed person…cannot conceptualize the essence of knowledge nor its sublimity… one who fails to conceptualize something, its significance will never become rooted in the heart.” The heirs of the Prophets is a push start to conceptualizing the utter importance of gaining beneficial knowledge so that it can be rooted in the heart of the Muslim body.

This book has great benefits not only for those who wish to pursuit the path to knowledge but also those who wish to assess their own goals in life. In whatever we do we must have a purpose, action without consequence is nothing but a waste of time. When reading this book my own personal goal to attain the most knowledge, true beneficial knowledge as I can while Allah stills allows me is even more engrained then ever before.

Sahl Ibn Muzâhim (rahimahullâh) said:

“The matter is more tighter upon a scholar than when one clenches his fist tightly, even though the ignorant person is not excused because of his ignorance (i.e. he will be held to account also). However, the scholar will receive a greater punishment if he abandons what he has knowledge of and doesn’t act upon it.”

So even though we strive for the station of great knowlegde, it does not come comlete without the responsibilty and honour that knowledge grants an individual.”And whosoever does an atom’s weight of good, he shall see it.

And whosoever does an atom’s weight of evil, he shall see it.” [99:7-8]

Shaykh Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah- rahimahullaah – said:

“There are six stages to knowledge:
Firstly: Asking questions in a good manner.
Secondly: Remaining quiet and listening attentively.
Thirdly: Understanding well.
Fourthly: Memorising.
Fifthly: Teaching.
Sixthly– and it is its fruit: Acting upon the knowledge and keeping to its limits.”
[Miftaah Daarus-Sa ‘aadah ( p.283).]

Also Mu’adh ibn Jabal Radi Allaahu Ta’ala ‘anhu who stated that the Messenger of Allaah Salla Allaahu ‘alahi wa Sallam said in a Khutbah:

“Learn Al-Ilm (knowledge), for learning it is a type of khashyah (Fear) of Allaah, seeking it is an act of worship, studying it is a type of Tasbih, searching for it is a Jihaad, teaching it to those who do not know is a charity and delivering it to those worthy of it is an act of drawing closer to Allaah…. it is a weapon to use against the enemies….

Allaah elevates some people by knowledge to the rank of leaders in righteousness who are followed, their actions imitated and their opinions referred to…. with knowledge the slave reaches the ranks of the righteous and the elevated grades in this dunya and the Hereafter. Thinking about knowledge is equivalent to Siyam (fasting), and studying it is equivalent to Qiyam (praying at night voluntarily)…. Only the happy ones are endowed with knowledge while the miserable ones are deprived of it.”
